This mural was created in public space by public contributors to celebrate the life and work of Rosa Parks— on the 15th anniversary of her passing— and to amplify Black voices by creating space for community members to create their own messages in support of Black lives and the work at hand. Artists sought to heighten dialogue regarding the urgency for police accountability, specifically, with respect to Black women.

Organizers also sought to raise public awareness of the 75+ cases of missing Black women currently unsolved in Chicago.

“Rosa Parks Celebration Mural: Raise Your Voice” was donated to St. Francis de Sales High School and is permanently installed in the Media Center.

This was the first time in Chicago’s history that a public painting event was held downtown as an act of civil protest.
